Bora Bora 2007

Bora Bora has the most beautiful water in all of French Polynesia.  Not surprisingly there are hundreds of over-water bungalows all over the island.  One of our trip highlights was a four hour drive in a 4x4 over the unpaved back roads.  This is the only way to get a full view of the water or to get to the WW II U.S. gun emplacements which were impressive.

The cruise line has a private beach here with beautiful white sand.

These over-water bungalows are all over French Polynesia, but a especially plentiful on Bora Bora.

There are twin peaks overlooking Bora Bora.  They have never been scaled.

We were told that the 4x4 drivers were all experienced.  Ours confessed to being 19 years old - after he took us back to the ship.

It took three tries to negotiate this steep muddy road.  I think all the passengers had their eyes closed on the last attempt.

This is the original Bloody Mary's, memorialized in Michener's Tales of the South Pacific.  Note the sand floor.

We took a sunset cruise around the island which was so-so.  The highlight was when Pat took over the boat.

Looking down on some bungalows you can see the color and clarity of the water.

The U.S. had four gun emplacements here in WW II.  Looks  like better duty than Iwo Jima.

We visited an artist at his home in the mountains.  Very Peaceful.
