Return to map of Africa

Johannesburg

Not counting the time spent in the airport, we were in Jo'burg a little more than 12 hours. Unbeknownst to us, Abercrombie and Kent had booked us into one of the world's truly great hotels - The Saxon. This is where Oprah stays when she comes to South Africa to visit her school.  Nelson Mandela stayed here while he was working on his autobiography.  We stayed in the Eboli Suite which was featured this month in British Air's in-flight magazine this month.  We paid a lump sum for the tour so have no idea what we paid for this room.  Good thing - if I knew I probably wouldn't have gone to sleep.

Evidently the Saxon called for a rainbow even though the skies were clear.  Very impressive.

We didn't have much time to explore the grounds, but what we saw was beautiful.  Here is some lush bougainvillea.

This is the hotel lobby.  The phrase understated elegance comes to mind.

This is the sitting area of our suite.  Every piece of furniture is a work of art.

I've seen four-poster beds before, but  never marble.

The batroom was large, very large.  We have stayed in hotel rooms that weren't as large as this bathroom.
